Both metal halide lamps and sodium lamps are high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. Because of high illumination efficiency, wide application, and prolonged life cycle, HID lamps are becoming increasingly popular nowadays. However, right now most of the ballasts used in HID lamps are electromagnetic ballasts. Electromagnetic ballasts have obvious disadvantages such as high energy consumption (15%~20%) during its normal use and therefore have adversely affected HID lamps’ efficiencies. Consequently, promoting the application of electronic ballasts in HID lamps is an inevitable tendency.
